It’s not about positive thinking
People love to talk about positive thinking, saying that positive thoughts leads to positive results, and thus, critical thoughts lead to negative outcomes.
However, there’s just one problem with this scenario: You end up with nothing more than a lot of people who are lying to themselves about what they really think.
So I am certainly not going to tell you that if you were to just believe you could have perfect, beautiful skin, you could have it. We both know that kind of advice goes in one ear and out the next.
Pretending a problem doesn’t exist, won’t make it go away.
But I’m also not going to tell you that the solution lays in obsessing over your problem skin, and trying to get rid of the things you don’t like about it. Because the other truth of the matter is this:
Fighting with your skin only leads to fighting with yourself—and that leads nowhere.
We all have our demons—every one of us—those pesky critical thoughts and internal hateful voices that are constantly telling us what is wrong and what needs to be fixed.
When you fight with your skin, you actually empower those demons, because they LOVE to fight. And this leaves you feeling completely powerless against your problems and totally defeated.
The way to transcend the fight against your skin
You can productively work with the skin you’ve been given without letting the problems you have with it control you, and here’s how: By accessing a power within you that is greater than those demons. That power is love.
Yep, you heard me—love.
It may sound corny, or completely unrealistic and similar to that whole “positive thinking” thing, but before you click off this article let me explain.
You know that part of you that offers comfort to your bestie when she’s upset, corrects her when she insults herself, and is always her biggest advocate? That’s love.
And it is time to turn it inward—treat yourself like your own best friend. When you do, you are practicing self-love, and it is our greatest, deepest power.
You already have it in you, whether you realize it all the time or not.
Your self-love has the power to see your problems for what they are, not for what you fear they are.
When you activate self-love, you have the power to see beyond the fear.
Self-love sees past the demon inside you that has taken hold of your skin problems. Your self-love knows that the demon is only really a scared child, and thus, when you accept, sooth and silence your demon, your skin problem all of a sudden feels much more manageable.
It is what it is: part of you, lovable, acceptable, and, yes, changeable.
Instead of fighting your skin, you’ll approach your skin problems from a place of positive motivation—loving your skin and wanting the best for it. Thus caring for it, nurturing it, and tending to its needs with loving kindness.
A Meditation For Skin Problems
To help you direct some self-love to your own skin and internal demon, I have created a soothing meditation that’s less than 9 minutes long to activate the deep well of unconditional love within yourself.
I recommend you integrate it as part of your nightly ritual: After you have removed your makeup and washed your face, find a comfortable place to sit where you can breath into your whole body and relax. Then close your eyes, and begin.
