So when I hear a new green makeup line has shown up on the scene, my ears perk up!
At the same time, I raise an eyebrow too because I’m hard to please.
My basis for comparison comes from a decade of using the best conventional brands on runway shows and magazine editorials around the world.
Let’s face it, a lot of clean makeup brands are disappointing and so many “natural” ones are just greenwashing.
When Nu Evolution Cosmetics launched in August of 2014, they invited me to be one of the first people to try their line — and I went with my usual expectation to be underwhelmed.
To sum up my experience of Nu Evolution in two words, I’ll just say — I’m impressed.
Their natural and certified organic ingredients, sexy packaging, serious performance, rich pigments, awesome textures and beautiful color selections are killing it!
“For The Beauty Junkie Without The Junk®”
It’s obvious in their tag line alone that the founders of Nu Evolution, Nadine Cormier and Sandra Anderson Diaz, are paying attention to what the beauty buyer really is looking for: healthy, quality, beautiful (cruelty-free) cosmetics that deliver.
As an incredibly young, unknown brand they are already participating in New York Fashion Week. Nu Evolution seems to be positioning themselves to become the MAC of the green world, designing products and color palettes on par with the big boys (and girls) in cosmetics.
Now I’d like to walk you through a few of my favorites from Nu Evolution that I’ve been trying out both personally and on set.
The Camouflage Cream is basically a 2-in-1 product that doubles as an eye cream because it’s jam-packed with hydrating botanicals; perfect for under eyes where you need coverage and brightening to cancel out those less-than-restful nights.
What I found most surprising is that even for being so moist, this concealer stays put nicely throughout the day without the dry (aging) cakiness we all detest.

- Is a liquid
- Offers fuller coverage
- Isn’t shiny on the skin
- Is made with safe, natural and organic ingredients
Nu Evolution’s foundation delivers on all these points.
Can I get a “Hallelujah!”?
A huge number of women prefer using a liquid, but in the green world there’s not been much to choose from because in the past it was pretty hard to formulate a good, clean liquid foundation.
It’s also so great to see they didn’t glitter up their liquid foundation with “light reflecting particles”. Not everyone wants fake looking dewy skin, so this one that dries with a matte finish and actually offers pretty significant coverage; perfect for someone who has some issues to cover and/or struggles with oily skin.
As an artist and a consumer, I far prefer having a foundation with more pigment like this one that I can thin out on my own, rather than pay for a makeup that I can never get enough coverage out of.
Here are some tips for working with the Complete Foundation:
- If you do have drier skin be sure that your skin is well exfoliated before applying your morning moisturizer. Let it soak in before applying foundation. Then mix just a teensy bit more of your daily moisturizer into a dollop of foundation.
- If you want to create a sheer look on the skin, mix several drops of your favorite face serum into the palm of your hand with a dab of foundation to achieve the desired texture and coverage.

Pressed Powder Foundation
I have been absolutely loving the way this finely milled matte powder looks on my skin. I can use it with the big fluffy brush as a sheer setting powder over foundation, or I can use it on its own with a more condensed brush for greater coverage and evening out of skin tone.
I’ve been having fun layering this in all kinds of different ways, and even using the darker shade has a subtle contour and bronzer for the cheek.
Plus pressed powder is just so much easier to use.
- It looks cuter when you whip it out of your purse for a touch up.
- It has less chance of opening in your bag and making powder bomb.
- You will also waste less during application since it’s less likely to fly into the air and all over the bathroom counter.
Normally I don’t like to focus on the “what’s not in it” aspect of clean beauty products, because I think we need to focus beneficial ingredients — but I want to make special note of Nu Evolution’s “No List”.
A lot of companies put the highly irritating ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride into their natural mineral foundation which drives me crazy. It’s natural but so bad for most people’s skin.
Thankfully Nu Evolution was smart enough to leave this out, along with any parabens, artificial dyes, synthetic fragrances, talc, phenoxyethanol, triclosan, BHT, dimethicone, or gluten.
I may have to set up a shrine to them in my bathroom now.

To get this supremely luscious look, they rely on a blend of botanical oils, herbs, certified organic beeswax and rice powder, which is so much better for your lashes’ health than drying gunk that most mascaras have in them!
Like all of Nu Evolution’s products, their mascara is cruelty-free, meaning animals didn’t have to test it out first.

Powerful color, creamy texture, stays put for hours and is made with clean, healthy and organic ingredients.
Hi. I love you.
As a make up artist and as a woman, this is as good as it gets!
I’m always telling people that one of the first things they should change out in their makeup bags, when they want to go green and clean with their beauty, is lipstick.
You are kissing, eating, talking, licking, and drinking it off your lips all the time. You really need to be conscientious about what is actually going onto your mouth because it goes much more directly into your system than just about any other make a product that you wear (besides foundation).
Nu Evolution shows their fashion roots with colors that are modern, wearable and even daring there’s something for everyone be it a classic nude, hot red or bold pink or vampy berry, they haven’t missed a beat.
There hasn’t been one color I haven’t loved. I’m truly I’ve been impressed at how well they stay on my lips even through all the talking and eating I do in a day – without being dry. Their conditioning ingredients like organic cocoa and Shea butters are a dream.
My summer favorite that I know I’ll be able to pull off through fall is Diva a fuchsia pink that I think is worth the risk to try even if you shy away from bright. It’s just so flattering and fun for a range of skin tones.
I used Femme Fatale (an orangey red) on several of my warm skinned clients for shoots. Melon is a cheerful color that is fresh and less of a commitment for days when I don’t want to make a huge statement on my lips.

The green beauty industry has been working really hard to make improvements and get past the long-held stigma about the inferiority of green formulation.
With the introductions of new brands like Nu Evolution Cosmetics, I think we’ve finally hit a significant turning point proving that the gap between glam and green is swiftly closing if not already a mute point.
