Betting that most of you don’t know the power of a common ingredient we keep in our pantries ready to be spread on toast or swirled into tea, I’m here to share the wonders of honey.
Those of you with oily, dry, irritated or blemished skin, listen up!
Honey contains vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are essential to healthy skin. It is an amazing health and beauty product that repairs damaged tissue, kills bacteria and moisturizes the skin and hair.
Honey is a natural “wonder” ingredient as it contains over 80 nutrients including anti-oxidants and enzymes. It has valuable benefits whether you are eating a teaspoon of organic, raw honey or applying it to your face.
Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains water. This is great news for oily skin sufferers who can now bring moisture to their skin without “oil” by using honey as a moisturizing mask or finding a reputable product line, like Bee Yummy™, that is made with honey. It is also great for dry patchy skin and a good compliment to dermatologist treatments, which tend to leave your skin dehydrated.
Honey also has strong antimicrobial properties (antibacterial and antifungal), making it excellent for infections (like blemishes) and wounds. Research in New Zealand has led to surprising results on the curative powers of a special honey called Manuka. Manuka honey is effective and so high in antimicrobial properties that hospitals use it in their wound care procedures. Look for Manuka honey packaged with a label of UMF 15+ (or higher) as this indicates significant antimicrobial properties.
My favorite way to apply this honey is to gently massage a tablespoon into my skin with small upward circles while the shower steams up my bathroom. Being that it is a little thick and sticky; the steam will assist in an easy application and absorption.
Honey may help rosacea sufferers in their journey toward relief from their often dry, red, irritated skin. Scientists are still unsure about what causes this condition, however some believe that skin mites gather in unusual large amounts, burrowing their heads into the skin, causing the irritation. Honey, with its calming and antifungal properties can prove to be the perfect remedy.
Honey also contains antioxidants and flavonoids, which play a crucial role in protecting the skin from damaging UV rays and assist in defending the skin against premature aging.
Because it is so gentle, honey is suitable for sensitive skin as well as children’s products.
Please note that some honeys are heated to promote fluidity and clarity. This process destroys most of its nourishing benefits. It is best to buy raw organic honey at a reputable health food store or a local farmer’s market. The Bee Yummy™ line from Live-Live & Organic is my secret weapon and the best product I have found to date that incorporates raw honey with all its enzymes and nutrients.
