Green Beauty Team is honored to have Rose Marie Swift the creator of RMS Beauty as our featured guest for “In the Spotlight”. She is best known as an internationally renowned, makeup artist with a rather illustrious career in the fashion world. Luckily for us, I managed to snag a few minutes of her time, which she agreed to while running off to do makeup for Giselle!
From a Green Beauty perspective, Rose Marie is one of the most knowledgeable and diligent people I’ve met. Talking to her is like opening an encyclopedia and I always learn something new. Plus, it’s so reassuring to see someone practicing what they preach.
When I began to dip my toes into the world of Green Beauty, I was lucky enough to set up one-on-one appointment with Rose Marie herself to see what this natural, organic makeup was all about. It was love at first sight…and touch! Now RMS has become a staple in my makeup bag because of the quality of the natural ingredients, the intensity of the pigments and how they make the skin positively glow.
Now it’s your chance to get an insider’s scoop on what it takes to create a makeup line this fantastic!
Rose Marie, tell us what first inspired you to create your own line of natural, organic makeup?
After many years in the fashion and make-up industry, I’ve learned a lot about the impact of daily exposure to chemicals in beauty care products. I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t live up to its promises. I see the results of taking a quick-fix approach to looking good. I know first-hand the price our health can pay in the pursuit of beauty. I realized that what women need are skin care, color cosmetics, toiletries that are as pure as possible, lines that create a solid foundation for anti-aging and long-term beauty.
Skin is a living organism. It breathes, interacts, and absorbs information from everything it encounters. It’s in constant communication with the environment. Without healthy skin, we are vulnerable to the effects of everything we encounter. Unfortunately, most ingredients in skin products and cosmetics were approved by the FDA when it was widely believed that the skin acted as a barrier to the outside world, blocking out whatever was applied to it. We now know that whatever we put on the skin is absorbed into the bloodstream. You only need to look to medical patches, anti-smoking patches and hormone replacement patches for proof.
My background as an advocate for cleaner cosmetics came when my own health deteriorated years ago and thru my research I realized many of the chemicals that were in my body were also found through out the beauty industry. I started my site www.beautytruth.com in 2004 exposing some of the more serious chemicals in our cosmetics and thru this I became very well versed on what chemicals make up our beauty products and the ramifications they can have long term. (I encourage you to read my site as I hope to have every single person open their minds to a new definition on cosmetics.)
The beautytruth site created a lot of press for me and the question over and over again asked by all my readers was…. what shall we use? I started studying ingredients labels in depth and the extent of the use of unregulated chemical ingredients (sorry to inform you but the FDA does not regulate our beauty industry…..it is self regulated by the actual people that are adding all these ingredients and deeming them safe). In fact, many ingredients are downright harmful. Some ingredients, like phthalates found in synthetic fragrances and nail polishes, are known to disrupt the hormone system, and are a factor in reproductive diseases and breast cancer. Sadly, the list of harmful ingredients in your personal care products is long – and we continue to use them daily. It begs the question: are short-term results now worth the risk of ugly health consequences later?
Even the so-called natural lines which we are all led to believe are safe and clean are not by any means safe or clean. The word “natural” means absolutely nothing. There are no laws that either define or regulate its use. You are on your own to find beauty products (or food for that matter) that are actually formulated with natural ingredients. It all comes down to chemistry: when a raw material is processed for use in cosmetics or other beauty products, it typically undergoes a lengthy process. I was surprised to learn that the majority of ingredients used for natural cosmetics are saponified, clarified, deodorized, fractionated and heated to high temperatures. But this means they’re not natural ingredients anymore – they are now equivalent to man-made chemicals. Complicating matters more, the processes strip away all of the nutrients that make natural ingredients beneficial to skin and health. It is like taking one of the healthiest foods such as broccoli and putting it is a pressure cooker. It is now what I call “dead”…. every beneficial enzyme, vitamin and antioxidant has been killed. That is why the concept of eating raw food has been making headlines with health advocates, nutritionists and celebrities.
I am honestly trying to educate every woman to be more aware of not just what they put on their skin but also what they put in their bodies. Your skin is a “mirror to your gut” so whatever is being put into the body is reflected in the skin. Eat healthy, eat wisely, and don’t underestimate the power of clean water, fruits and vegetables. Living a healthy life is what gives us beautiful healthy glowing skin.
How long did you have to work on the formulations, colors and packaging until you had a line you were satisfied with?
I am still working on formulations, colors, and packaging and new ideas all the time. I do need help for sure in some of the more difficult products that I am planning on doing so that is going to be a challenge in itself. I love learning so I am ready and am always keeping my ears open for new techniques and raw ingredients but that is easier said then done when it comes to organic products. There are still drawbacks with formulas and ingredients. Even something as simple as color being sourced from a natural origin is limiting in itself. When I first launched RMS Beauty I was not totally satisfied because I had a bigger vision but not the financing to go out and do a more extensive line. Now I am glad that I am started small because it gives me time to deliver a product that comes from the heart not from material gain.
Was that process a lot more intense that you expected?
Yes… unbelievably because I was up against a lot of odds. The narrow mindedness of the cosmetic business in general. If I had not done my own formulas and dictated every step it would not be here at all. Thank god I was driven and would not take NO for an answer.
Why do you think it’s important for people to be conscious and careful about the beauty products they are using?
Wow…that is a real reality check question. I find it so funny how people will dismiss alternatives for a healthy life. Some refuse to even acknowledge them. I have come to the conclusion that people are very set in their ways and they cannot admit to themselves that they might be wrong. It would mean that all the pesticides they have eaten on their everyday processed food….all the hormone disruptors and potential cancer causing ingredients in their everyday cosmetic, cleaning products, toxic air fresheners all over their homes would mean that their whole way of living is wrong. I think that would cause a lot of guilt mostly if they have children. People do not want to change so they dismiss new ideas and the truth about the reality of the seriousness of our toxic world. I wish everyone was as open as the ones that are reading this article because we would have a much healthier world. My mission is to re-educate everyone on some of the dangers of our beauty business even if it takes one person at a time or one day at a time….. I am happy with that.
I’ve heard you say that you’ve received letters from many women who have found RMS Beauty to be the answer to their prayers because they aren’t able to wear most makeup due to extreme sensitivities or medical conditions. That’s really incredible! Did you know that your products would be safe and beneficial for women like this too?
I was totally aware that my products would be fabulous for medical/sensitivity problems because I took that fully in account when I was formulating it. Each ingredient that is in the formula is there for a reason not from a marketing perspective. Each ingredient or exclusion of traditional ingredients is for a reason. For example…..I do not use essential oils because they irritate the skin especially around the eyes so they have been excluded. The list goes on but I cannot tell everything of course.
Now that the line has been going for a while what would you say is the most satisfying part of the process?
Satisfied means good enough and nothing is ever good enough for me so I am constantly thinking of the new idea or the new product. I am not satisfied yet……but I am getting there when I get positive feedback from people. That means more to me than anything.
Of course we are all dying to hear your favorite makeup tip; the one thing that might change our lives…well, at least when it comes to putting on makeup!
My favorite makeup tip has nothing to do with putting makeup on….it has to do with taking makeup off. That is right! This is the biggest mistake that women make. I see models grab those toxic makeup wipes to get their makeup off and I freak. TOXIC as hell for the skin mostly if you leave it on which the girls do. They cause long term damage to the skin, specially the fine delicate area around the eyes. It also dries out your eyelashes and they end up looking like dead, crooked, tree branches. This also includes all of those cosmetic brand removers. Ladies, if you want to clean the skin and remove that makeup no matter what you have caked on (waterproof mascara, etc.) nothing melts it off like my Raw Coconut Cream. It is a makeup remover and a face cleanser all on one and I tell you it works. Mine is a special raw virgin oil cream that is superior over any store bought coconut oil so beware of store bought brands even if it says organic. Organic is a guarantee of safety NOT quality. Mine is Organic and the highest quality. The enzymes and natural antioxidants help heal the skin and its natural anti-fungal, anti-bacterial properties clean the skin and remove bacteria beyond anything. Yes…even for acne prone skin. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
