Wedderspoon Organic has its roots in family, friends, and ethics. In 2005 Catherine Wedderspoon launched an entire brand essentially for her mom. Catherine’s mother had paid her a visit in Canada from the UK and was unable to find the powerfully healing manuka honey, which she took daily. Seeing a gaping need in the marketplace, Catherine and her husband Sebastien Martin subsequently launched their brand Wedderspoon Organic.
In late 2006 they reached out to their long-time friend, Fiona Nelson, who had become passionately interested in the healing properties of honey, to start their US division. Fiona started as a single employee and under her leadership as President sales have skyrocketed from 38 jars of manuka honey sold during 2006 out of her home, to 223,916 jars in 2013! We asked Fiona to give us an insider’s look at how this famous honey brand is now taking on the green beauty market with their new Queen of the Hive Skincare line.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer which was life changing for me. Since then I have changed the way I eat, becoming vegetarian and choosing mostly organic and locally sourced ingredients. I also then realized that it was important to be just as vigilant about what I put on my skin.
I became highly interested in the amazing properties of manuka honey once I started digging into the research about its popularity in other countries as a healing remedy.
What inspired you to make the transition from food to beauty?
After years of experience, we saw the various therapeutic benefits for using honey in skin treatments, especially as a cleanser and moisturizer. Seeing the need for truly clean body care products containing honey as a key ingredient, we introduced Manuka Honey Soap and Manuka Honey Lip Balm in in 2010, both of which are 100% organic. Two years later we unveiled our award-winning Queen of the Hive Contour Face Cream.
What would you say is the biggest reason people need to be conscious and careful about the beauty products they are using?
Store shelves are filled with products that contain artificial fragrances, harmful chemicals, colors, preservatives and even GMO ingredients that can be detrimental to our bodies. –> Click to tweet about this
We have learned so much in researching ingredients and realize how important it is to pay attention to what we are buying and putting on our skin.
Consumers really have to do their own research and find out about the brands themselves. Wedderspoon Organic USA started selling raw organically certified honeys in 2006, and to this day all of our raw honey is either certified organic or independently tested for over 250 chemicals. Not only are our almost all our honeys Non-GMO verified, but we also partner with and fully support the Non-GMO Project; something we are very proud of.
What is the most satisfying part of your work?
Definitely the positive feedback from customers telling us how much they love our honey products and how they have been helped by using them! We hear numerous stories about how our raw thyme or manuka honey has helped people suffering from acne, who say after trying a multitude of over-the-counter and even prescription medications that it’s the only thing that has worked. We also hear terrific testimonials from customers who internally take that same honey daily to help with digestive issues or to boost immune function.
Is there one product in the line you would recommend first?
Yes! Our amazing Queen of the Hive Contour Face Cream containing both bee venom and organic manuka honey. We are so proud of our new formula as it surpasses all others on the market today. Our organic manuka honey on its own has amazing healing properties and is a natural moisturizer for the skin.
Bee venom has been used for centuries as a therapeutic, anti-aging skin treatment. It works topically to ‘fool’ the skin into thinking it has been lightly stung. This action causes the body to increase blood flow to the area and stimulates the production of the naturally-occurring chemicals, collagen and elastin. Collagen strengthens body tissue, while elastin is the protein that helps the skin to remain firm.
By putting these two powerhouse ingredients together with no harsh chemicals or harmful ingredients, and 70% certified organic ingredients it’s a truly superior product.
