Sheryl Lynn Gibbs, a skin care specialist and the founder of the Sevani Botanica line of pure skin care products, learned to avoid synthetic products as a kid after being diagnosed with allergies to nail polish, fragrances, and dyes in foods. Now, the Licensed Holistic Aesthetician creates products in her lab with botanicals, organic ayurvedic nutrients, and cutting-edge cosmeceuticals — avoiding all synthetics and using organic and wild-crafted ingredients whenever possible.
What inspired you to make your line green? Was there an “a-ha” moment that fueled your interest in more natural products?
My own sensitivities to fragrances and dyes are what set me on a holistic path. Years ago, I worked at Aveda, back in day when they were the most cutting-edge in natural products. Then I went to work for a spa and established a loyal facial clientele before opening my own skin care studio so I could have control of products I used and to avoid the nail products that made me sick. As an aromatherapist, I always custom-blended with therapeutic-grade essential oils. And I’ve always custom-blended based on a client’s skin type with essential oils, carrier oils, and botanicals. Those blends evolved into my creation of Sevani, which started when clients asked, “Can I take it home with me?”
The toxic indications.
To be honest with you, it’s hard when everyone is marketing everything as non-toxic today. You have to be careful.
As a small business owner who maintains a loyal facial clientele, creating products with the most pure ingredients with decisions from an eco and non-toxic standpoint has posed many challenges, but it’s worth it. As a skin specialist myself, I’m really focused on inflammation reduction because of the propensity now toward inflammatory reactions, such as rosacea and adult acne, among others. I incorporate holistic and Ayurvedic remedies that have been known to treat inflammation, which is the leading cause of aging internally and externally and I made that a primary focus.

What is the most satisfying part of your work?
Client loyalty and feedback. When I get to create something that inspires someone to take time to write a letter or post a comment somewhere, that makes all the challenges so worth it.
The greatest reward is when clients say their skin has been dramatically improved and that the knowledge I shared has improved their appearance and, of course, their self-esteem.
Do you have a favorite beauty tip or piece of advice you can share with our readers?
I generally say, “be happy and be with nature” because nothing is more nurturing. When you nurture yourself, it naturally makes you happy. Hike in the woods or hug tree — really. It nurtures you and gives back. That’s why I utilized nature in all my formulas, too. It gives back in all of the results.
