Your wedding is coming up, and if there weren’t enough details to think about, someone poses the question, “Are you going to hire someone for makeup or do it yourself?”

That’s tricky because you know your everyday makeup probably isn’t going to cut it for a long day (and possibly night) of endless photos, talking, laughing, dancing — and let’s be real — a fair amount of crying, too.

Since wedding photos were meant to last a lifetime and the majority of those photos will show your face, this is no time to mess around!

As a makeup artist who’s done weddings all over the world from all over the U.S. to Italy, I definitely have some tips to share on how to find a great makeup artist and how to avoid the common pitfalls to avoid that most brides wish they knew ahead of time.

How to hire the right wedding makeup artist

It goes without saying that, if you’re looking to hire, you’ll be on the Internet looking at wedding sites, doing Google searches, checking out reviews and then sending inquiry emails. That’s a good start, but there’s more to it because some artists can convince you they are better than they are with some little tricks you may not be aware of.

A lot of brides ask, “What kind of makeup do you use?” Most artists use a wide variety of brands in their kit, so it’s a bit of a tough question to really base a decision on.

If eco, natural, organic, safe, and non-toxic makeup are important to you, then you need to search specifically for artists who specialize in that area. A standard artist is really not going to be equipped to work within that highly specialized area.

Next, make sure the artist’s resume and portfolio demonstrate that he/she is highly skilled in a variety of photographic situations.

Be Cautious: If a lot of the photos have a plastic or fake look to the skin, that means they’ve been overly airbrushed (AKA Photoshopped) and you can’t rely on that image to give you an accurate idea of how the makeup really looked. This is a sign that the artist is probably not that good.

Pick up the phone

Once you’ve selected a few artists who seem to fit your parameters and before you even get to the trial, I highly suggest picking up the phone and ask questions voice-to-voice. Notice how you feel about their responses and you’ll get an immediate sense if that artist is right for you.

Make sure the artist is comfortable working with your complexion, and will tailor the makeup application to the expected lighting, weather, and even theme of your wedding.

You might ask, “What does the theme of my wedding have to do with my makeup?” It matters a lot actually! If you are doing a quaint, garden wedding and your face looks like you are about to perform in a Las Vegas show it will look oddly out of place and not flow with the overall aesthetic.

Be Cautious: If the artist isn’t timely on responding to your call, is hard to get a hold of, or you feel like their responses are too vague. These are all signals of being unprofessional. The last thing you need is a flaky artist.

Try and try again

You would do well to have a trial with each artist you are considering and make sure you love how you look before making a decision. You’ll pretty much know as soon as you’re done if you are going to like the work of the artist or not. Also it will give you a chance to see how the products they use work for their face or cause a bad reaction.

Be Cautious: If you express a desire to change something and the artist isn’t willing to accommodate your desire, or brushes you off saying, “don’t worry about it” and offers no explanation as to why you shouldn’t. Sometimes artists do have valid reasons for doing something that may not seem right to you at first, but they can explain it to you and work with you on adjusting it so you do feel comfortable.

If you have a feeling in your gut that says you won’t be happy, but try to convince yourself it’s good enough — stop!

Get it in writing

Make sure you get the rate, along with all the other pertinent details of the service they are providing and when they are expected to work in writing. I offer all of my clients a very thorough contract that protects both me and them. That way no matter how many emails are exchanged, there is one document to refer to that says exactly what the expectations are.

All that trying along with the actual hiring can get expensive, so you may wish to do your makeup yourself. However unless you are really skilled with your makeup and can trust that you won’t have a shaky hand the day of, it’s best to hire out. Consider that your photos will almost all involve your face, so it’s not a frivolous expense, it’s an investment. This is a special day, and it’s a wonderful feeling to have a professional to make you look gorgeous and give you a moment of peace on a hectic day.

I hope all these tips will save you some headaches and will help you to find the perfect makeup artist for your big day!

Green Beauty Team has really hit its stride as the backstage and on-stage choice in New York City for sustainable, eco-friendly fashion and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

Designers and producers of eco fashion have been expanding their green awareness into their makeup and hair styling teams, which seems like a perfectly natural progression.

GBT Expert and stellar makeup artist, Rebecca Casciano and I worked side-by-side creating fresh, spring looks backstage for two notable shows for Earth Day. Both sustainable fashion presentations used “role models” in the eco community to showcase their collections — beautiful women (on the inside and out) who are actively spreading the message of global sustainability, driving home the message that eco fashion can be ethical, educational, and effective from top to bottom.

Eco Chick

First on that list was the Eco Chick Sustainable Spring Fashion Party. A fabulous mixer held at Green Spaces New York which featured spring styles by local NYC designers, tempting organic libations, vegan food, and some seriously awesome goody bags.

Rebecca and I made up the models with a variety of our favorite green brands including RMS Beauty, Ilia, W3LL People, and Sappho Cosmetics.

{Pictured top is eco-model Ariel Clay with Kristyna M.; Pictured bottom from left is Ariel Clay, Esosa Edosomwan, Starre Vartan (founder of Eco Chick), Kristen Arnett, Rebecca Casciano, Adela Capova, Kristyna M., Marissa Feinberg (co-founder of Green Spaces), Mayaan Laufer}

The party was a packed room of green fashion notables from the guests (such as eco-activist and model Summer Rain Oakes) to the models themselves, designers, and journalists. By the time we were finished “pretty-ing up” all the models and before the party ended, I had just enough time to grab some slices of delicious vegan cheese and crackers, throw back an organic lemonade, and say some quick hellos to a sea of familiar faces. What fun!

Eileen Fisher

Just a couple of days later, Rebecca and I headed backstage to do makeup for the Eileen Fisher Eco-Influencers Fashion Show at the Green Festival. Being asked to model as one of the eight “Eco-Influencers,” in addition to doing makeup backstage, was a true honor! I felt so lucky (and excited) to be able to show exactly what I believe in and what we, as Green Beauty Team, are capable of doing with natural makeup products in a tangible way to a live audience!

Our backstage beautification was sponsored by W3LL PEOPLE, a cosmetics brand I just can’t say enough good things about. Their makeup totally fits in with the Green Beauty Team standards of being clean and delivering beautiful results. They even sent us one of their top makeup artists, Andrea Edwards, for extra support!

Though I relied heavily on my makeup team to create fresh, pretty looks for each model, I still found myself standing in lineup before going on stage touching up lips and being, well, a perfectionist about it all.

Mara Schiavetti, the founder of agreenbeauty.com, brought her top-notch hairstyling skills and single-handedly whipped everyone’s hair into shape!

Each eco-influencer model brought her own story, mission, and purpose to share with the audience. The delightful models included designer Carrie Parry; writers Greta Eagen, Jessica Marati, Emma Grady, Sass Brown, Amanda Coen, and Jasmin Malik Chua.

Honestly, having done over a hundred fashion shows in my career, I can say I’ve never experienced such a positive, happy backstage environment. The tireless, always enthusiastic show producer, Amy DuFault, said it was if someone had sprinkled “happy dust” into everyone’s drinks that day. The smiles were unstoppable!

See the rest of the backstage excitement and all those smiley moments in our album on Facebook.

To add even more to the honors and thrill of it all — May 9th Green Beauty Team will be honored at the Go Green For Fashion NYC awards and yours truly will be giving the keynote speech! Go here for more information and to RSVP.

Your level of health can manifest itself in many different ways. Our skin, nails, and hair are some of the features that people notice first and among the most visible signs of health. Is the hair thinning? Is it brittle? Has it lost its luster? Is it limp?

Because your hair is composed of discharged protein cells and its health is affected by many environmental factors including diet, stress level, and exposure to chemicals, it tells a story.

What is your story?

As for me, I have always had fine hair. At points in my life it has been full, but even then I lost about 100- 150 strands a day, which is normal. With this loss comes active re-growth in the form of new, shorter hair. I have noticed that during stressful times, such as a bad breakup, I have lost greater amounts of hair, sometimes even in clumps. At these times I do all I can to reduce my stress level to help keep my hair as thick as possible. In general, I have an awareness of my stress level in relation to my hair health.

Going Gray at an Early Age

I discovered my first gray hair at 21. Now in my mid 30’s, I am about 35 percent gray.

Gray hair has two causes: mineral deficiency and heredity (pre-mature greying).

Starting at age 18, I embraced a vegan and vegetarian lifestyle for seven years, but didn’t properly educate myself on nutrition. During that time, I lacked the protein and minerals that keep the color in new hair growth. In addition, all the women on both sides of my family went gray at an early age.

I color my hair using natural hair dye from the health food store. For the last five years, I’ve indulged in deep conditioning treatments, glosses, and occasional highlights at the beautiful loft salon my best friend runs, as they have transitioned to mostly organic low-chemical products and color.

Is your hair thinning?

When men lose their hair it is due to testosterone’s effect on the hair follicle, stress, or heredity. When women lose their hair, the causes are similar: hormone imbalance, stress, or other underlying medical conditions.

>> >> Read more about the Reality of Hair Loss

When women are pregnant, they often stop losing any hair at all and as their bellies grow, their hair gets more gorgeous and lustrous than ever. When they give birth the hair will often fall out -– this is normal.

If you’re unhappy with the current health of your hair, here are 10 surefire ways to get your tresses thick, shiny, and bouncy!

1. Eat well

Hair is protein discharge, and adding good quality animal protein to your diet will help encourage growth.

Eat WHOLE eggs. They contain biotin, folate, silica, and B-5, which are all universally known for helping promote lustrous hair. Consuming enough fat can aid in improving overall shine and texture. When I looked at the most recommended (by the very knowledgeable vitamin expert at my health food store) food grade hair, skin, and nail vitamin blend, it was clear that eating more kale (vitamin C and Silica) berries (more C), onions, leeks, garlic or scallions (sulfur), mushrooms (zinc), almonds, brown rice (vitamin E), liver, sunflower seeds (pantothenic acid – B5), lobster, oysters, beef liver, crab, and shitake mushrooms (copper) and a wide variety of antioxidant herbs like ginger, rosemary, and turmeric root, could benefit hair growth and make hair even more gorgeous!

2. Get a shower filtration system

This is a big deal because you can absorb large amounts of chlorine while you shower, and there is no telling what that does to your hair and your health.

Filtering shower water removes a plethora of nasty chemicals and that is good all around.

3. Be careful what products you use

Certain products can clog the hair shaft, and that will impede new growth. Many products contain alcohol, which will strip your hair. The chemicals in most commercial hair care products are simply awful. Choose natural, green products instead. I am a big fan of the John Masters line because he uses a lot of essential oils and plant-based ingredients.

4. Try not to wash so much or don’t wash at all

When I say “not washing” I mean not the typical way … you still need to cleanse your scalp, here is more about that: I was up late one night watching an infomercial for a hair cleanser (Wen brand) that was organic and did not foam, as it had no laurel sulfates, and used no chemicals at all. Many celebrities endorsed it and I found myself glued to the TV for the whole hour-long infomercial. Yes, I ordered the product and have been buying it ever since. It cleans my hair without foaming or stripping, and it extends the life of my color. I like this concept. Most commercial products contain sodium laurel sulfate, which can be very harmful.

Read your ingredients. If you can’t pronounce it or wouldn’t eat it, leave it on the shelf.

For a list of toxic ingredients go to the Green Beauty Team toxic ingredients glossary

5. Be gentle

Comb through wet hair with a wide-tooth comb. Start at the ends and go slowly. Too many people brush and yank at their hair when it is wet and most delicate. Buy a high-quality professional hair dryer and use it at the medium setting, or don’t blow dry your hair at all. When using heating tools like a dryer, flat iron, curling iron, or hot rollers, be sure to use natural products for heat protection. Be slow and gentle and you will be happy with your locks.

6. Wear a hat in the sun if you color your hair

This recommendation is straight from the lovely Joanna Gonzalez, my colorist at Butterfly Studio NYC, especially if you have highlights — this will tone down the brassiness.

7. Do some deep conditioning weekly or bi-weekly

For a simple treatment at home, mash an over-ripe avocado with olive oil and egg yolks, and leave in your hair for an hour while you read or catch up on Facebook. I recommend wearing a conditioning cap, rinsing off well, and shampooing with a gentle non-chemical shampoo immediately after.

8. Harmonize your hormones

This can be a tough one; I work with my clients on this. Harmonizing hormones takes time and patience because often it took quite a while to get them out of whack — it takes time to balance them. Mostly it is cleaning up the diet and getting plenty of rest, stress management, and being very aware of your relationship with synthetic hormones (found in commercial meats, dairy, eggs, and birth control pills)

9. Add some sort of stress management practice

Yoga and meditation and for the love of G-d, please get some sleep!

10. Love the hair you have now

I know this sounds challenging, but if you look in the mirror and say to your friends “I hate my hair!” it actually hurts your hair energetically. Love your hair, no matter what state is in.

Whenever you start to think about hating it, replace that thought with a love thought and affirm: “My hair is lustrous and beautiful,” “My hair is my crowning glory,” or “I am thankful for my healthy, full head of hair.”

You could also rent the movie “Hair” or go see Disney’s “Tangled.”

Some of my clients have walked into my office with hair so thin I could see their scalps. After changing their diet to include the “healthy hair foods” setting rules about sleep and stress management and making sure to have good quality hormone-free animal protein, milk, and dairy, their hair changed drastically. More often than not, it took three-to-six months, but there was a noticeable difference. While I’m not making any promises, I am confident that if you incorporate these suggestions into your lifestyle, you could give Rapunzel a run for her money.

Detox your skin and practice some loving self care with this three-step beauty ritual. You will remove dead skin cells, steam clean, and purify for baby soft, glowing skin.

Spring is the season of renewal, and this time of year has my schedule packed with clients seeking to slough off winter skin with a deep cleansing facial.

For those of you who can’t make it into my Brooklyn, NY office here is the DIY version of my spring cleansing facial for you to enjoy at home!

What you’ll need

Exfoliant

Natural clay mask

Large bowl for steaming

2 herbal tea bags

Optional: raw honey

Time: about 30 minutes

Preparation

Select two tea bags for your herbal steam — I like lemongrass to purify. You can use just about anything herbal you have on hand though. Chamomile is great for soothing and peppermint will give you more tingle.

Boil water, and pour into a large bowl, then add your tea bags. Let it cool and brew for at least five minutes. While your steam is steeping, go ahead with step one.

Step 1: Exfoliate

My current favorite is Josh Rosebrook’s Active Enzyme Exfoliator, which is an amazing concoction of honey, walnut shells, and herbs. For more sensitive skin types including inflamed acne, I really like Dr. Alkaitis’ Exfoliating Mask.

Both of these exfoliants work best when they stay on the skin for a little while, as they contain enzymes which need time to do their thing. So these masks can stay on your skin while you steam.

For exfoliants which are not enzyme-based, all you have to do is scrub, rinse, and pat dry.

Step 2: Steam

Set a timer for 5-10 minutes. Make a steam tent over you and your bowl by draping a towel over your head and shoulders. Breathe deeply, relax, and steam away. I love this step — you’ll come out of your “tent” all rosy and renewed!

Added bonus: the steam can alleviate seasonal sinus pressure.

Important note: Make sure to back off if the steam feels too hot. Sensitive and inflamed skin types should let the water cool for a few extra minutes, and steaming should be avoided altogether with rosacea.

Step 3: Mask

Clay masks are skin cleansing champions. Clay is super absorbent — it soaks up excess oils and toxins from your skin.

You can find a plain, powder clay mask at most health food stores, or order it online. I use Shea Terra’s clay in my practice.

Mix the powder with water until it forms a thick but spreadable paste. Apply the clay with fingertips, and set your timer for 10 minutes. If you have dry skin, try mixing a teaspoon of raw honey in with your clay, and place a damp washcloth over your face so the clay doesn’t dry.

>> >> Read more about the benefits of honey for your skin

Remove mask with warm water and a washcloth (don’t worry, the clay comes out in the wash!). Apply your usual toner and moisturizer.

Final step: pat yourself on the back for doing some amazing self care, and flaunt your gorgeous, glowing skin!

India is a country with a distinct beauty. The cinema known as Bollywood shows radiant colors, and beautiful women adorned with jewels, mendhi patterns, and black smoky eyes.

Grooming practices in India are very traditional. Indians believe that a healthy diet, oiling the body, and avoiding the use of chemicals are the best way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That’s why in India many oils, plants, and herbs substitute the consumer goods used in the West.

India has a connection to the feminine power represented by the Devi (goddesses) in the Hindu religion that showcases natural beauty, and untouched skin. During my visit in 2012, I discovered that in this place called India, life lives in everything. Drop a seed and it will grow overnight.

What does it mean to be beautiful in India?

Both the elder and modern Indian woman embraces her beauty.

It’s always about what’s in the inside, the intention, the truth behind the smile. Beauty is celebrated by the connection to oneself and the quiet of the mind in this magical land.

From these cultural values, Indian women are more involved in inner beauty than outer beauty.

Wedding ceremonies are one of the most beautiful times for young women to take part in culture-rooted traditions. Among many of the elaborate traditional wedding preparations is one that any woman can easily do for herself to create brighter skin.

To prepare and clean the skin, turmeric powder is applied to the body as a mask (see below) and a bath of oils and powders are mixed to create a relaxing rejuvenating treatment.

>> >> Find out how turmeric in your diet is both an age and acne fighter

Turmeric Body Mask Recipe

This mask will leave your skin brighter, and works great with dry and acne-prone skin. You can use anywhere on the body for an instant glow.

Note: Turmeric does stain and will leave a yellowish tint on the skin depending on how light you are.

Pleasure and enjoyment need to surround our food in order to achieve the naturally glowing skin and energized health we all deserve. In my last article I shared 3 Foods That Ruin Your Complexion and it caused quite the buzz. It is not all about deprivation — as that won’t ensure sustainable changes in our health. So as promised here are a few among the many healthy alternatives to get you started …

Skin Saver #1 Green Beauty Smoothies

A lot of us search for a quick fix when it comes to our skin and health. Green smoothies are blended veggies and a little fruit … and it is delicious, pure skin-loving nutrition!

A mixture containing leafy greens blasts you with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are already predigested by blending will take away the dull and weathered skin, making it appear more youthful.

Green smoothies reduce acne and become a skin saver by acting as a morning clean-up crew. The fiber from the vegetables and fruits become little brooms to sweep away excess toxins and hormones that have been released overnight which need to be properly eliminated.

Beginning each morning with my ‘Green Beauty Smoothie’ recipe is the best way to get skin glowing instantly. This particular recipe is so creamy and satisfying, you can even have it for dinner when it’s too late to cook and you won’t miss the (complexion-ruining) dairy!

Laurisa’s Green Beauty Smoothie Recipe

Fill blender with:

8 oz. unsweetened vanilla hemp milk* (Tempt brand is a fave!)

2-3 handfuls organic spinach

1 tbsp coconut oil (unrefined & virgin)

½ cup frozen mango or pineapple

¼ avocado

1 tsp chia seeds

sweeten with stevia to taste (you’ll need very little)

*You can use any milk alternative here such as unsweetened vanilla almond milk, unsweetened coconut milk or unsweetened hemp milk.

If you dedicate time to do a little preparation for the week ahead (like on a Sunday evening) by separating ingredients into individual containers for each day and placing them in the freezer, smoothies only take two minutes to prepare each morning and look very pretty in a to-go cup for your commute!

Skin Saver #2 Stevia

To avoid dreaded premature aging, you’ve been officially advised to kick sugar out of your diet! Many folks ask, “What can be used to sweeten up life while getting off the sugar habit?” There are options like raw honey, coconut nectar, and molasses — but all of these can still raise blood sugar which can put your energy levels on the up and down roller coaster.

>> >> Read 6 Tips to Kick Sugar Cravings to the Curb

Stevia is a great alternative to sugar. This herb is derived from a small shrub primarily found in China and South America. It is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar, has zero calories, and does not cause blood sugar spikes that can be problematic for the skin. It comes in either a powder or liquid and is perfect in tea, coffee, oatmeal, and green smoothies.

Be on the lookout for brands of stevia that add sugar, which obviously defeats the purpose of a sugar-free sweetener.

Also avoid these ingredients

erythritol

dextrose

maltodextrin

fructose

isomaltulose

FOS

glycerin

I prefer the brands Now’s Better Stevia, SweetLeaf and Body Ecology Stevia Liquid Concentrate. These don’t have the bitter taste sometimes associated with stevia and none of the sugar additives. Keep packets or a little bottle in your purse for on-the-go sweetening and you’ll never be stuck with that sugar packet again.

Skin Saver #3 Gluten-Free Grains

Removing flour from the diet proves to be one of the greatest challenges, but not impossible! There are many delicious alternatives to feast upon as you’re eliminating flour and gluten from your diet. Keep in mind; once these skin-sabotaging ingredients are out of your system for a few weeks, the cravings for bread disappear as the body becomes less inflamed and more balanced.

Just because a product is labeled “gluten-free” doesn’t necessarily make it healthy.

Many brands have created foods that are heavily processed with added sugar. When opting away from flour, the best bet is to concentrate on more whole, real foods and gluten-free grains like brown rice, quinoa, and millet. Oats are okay, just be sure to look for the gluten-free label.

A few extra tips to get you over the “flour hurdles”

Craving a sandwich? Wrap it up with a collard leaf instead.

Need some pasta? Look for quinoa or rice flour options — just look for simple ingredients.

Doing some baking? Try coconut flour, almond meal, buckwheat, or flax seed meal.

Once you embrace skin-saving foods, you’ll never go back to the complexion-ruining culprits.

Women begin to feel as if they are miles away from the impossible standards given to them by the media. Should we enhance our natural beauty? Absolutely! However, we seem to be destroying, not enhancing, it.

We will experience different kinds of beauty from the time we are born through our teens, our 20s, 40s and so on. A 60-year-old woman will never look like she’s 25, and that’s okay. If she learns to harness her inner goddess, she will exude beauty’s glow. Can’t we just accept that beauty changes?

Many women are constantly ‘chasing beauty’ instead of nurturing the beauty they were born with.

We can see the reaction to this everywhere we look. Most notably in the rising number of cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures. Hollywood is becoming increasingly self-conscious to the point that even young celebrities like Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian have that “injected” look; their true beauty now partly damaged. We have drifted so far from the idea of enhancing our natural beauty to having an almost comical version where people look like caricatures of themselves.

Fake tans, fake eye color, illnesses born out of hating one’s body, swollen lips and faces to match. Not only are there dangers associated with plastic and cosmetic procedures, but the results look phony and unpleasant — making me wonder why we do this to ourselves?

Psychology plays a big role in the why. For a book I’m currently writing, I examine why society is straying from natural forms of beauty toward manipulated and manufactured “characters.”

True beauty is natural beauty. We really should be doing more to nourish and protect our natural resources instead of trying to take imaginary shortcuts. Beauty is organically within all of us.

Ways to support sustainable & healthy self-beauty

* Accept your natural beauty. Identify what is uniquely yours whether it is almond-shaped eyes, full thighs, or big luscious lips (different cultures, different features). Learn to work with and accentuate it!

* Lifestyle & grooming are important. Things like haircuts, proper hygiene, mani/pedis, waxing, regular facials, vitamins/supplements, sleep, exercise, healthy diet, drinking in moderation, and not smoking go a long way in making you look hot!

* Learn to use makeup. It can actually protect our skin and enhance our natural beauty when used in moderation. Stop by your favorite makeup store during non-peak hours and let them know you want to try out a few looks and learn how to use some basic products like primer, concealer, bronzer, and highlighters which really do wonders for contouring your face.

>> >>Book a session with Green Beauty Team‘s founder, celebrity makeup artist Kristen Arnett, who can show you which natural products work best and guide you on how to use them so you feel confident every day!

* Hairstyles and fashion can also enhance our natural beauty. Certain cuts work better on particular face shapes, just like certain clothing flatters different body types.

* Take care of your skin. Don’t just slather anything on it. Your focus should be ingredient-driven, just as you would examine the ingredients on your food labels, look for ingredients that will nourish and protect your skin (and hair). Review some of our other articles for inspiration!

* Make YOU a priority. Make beauty time a private and relaxing event. Once a week take two hours to yourself — no phone, no computer, no company. Give yourself a mask, massage your face and body with a nourishing balm, and tell yourself you’re beautiful just the way you are.

Soon you will be radiating a sense of health, well being and self-love that no one can take away from you!

One of the first things I wanted to change as I made my makeup kit “green” were my makeup brushes made of animal hair that was collected through some rather inhumane practices. Why not try these eco- and animal-friendly options?

In my quest for the balance of beauty and wellness, I’ve delved into the contents of my makeup kit like never before. I’m researching makeup that is more natural, organic, and toxin-free, as what we put on our bodies inevitably goes into our bodies through our pores. Not an epiphany, but in the past I’ve just accepted certain things as the exceptions in my otherwise healthy lifestyle. Go figure!

Many brushes are made of animal hair such as squirrel, pony, goat, sable, and mink. Every year, millions of these animals are trapped, cruelly beaten and killed for their hair and fur. Not to mention the possibility of dead skin cells, bacteria and chemicals on the brushes that we use all over the face! Yikes.

Try these eco- and animal-friendly options:

“The Divinity Collection” of vegan brushes are designed by makeup artist extraordinaire Roque Cozzette. Each brush was created with premium synthetic hair and shaped for precise makeup application. These brushes are an incredibly luxurious and gorgeous addition to any makeup kit!

Alima Pure is one of my most favorite pure and natural makeup lines. I’m using their sturdy set of cruelty-free brushes and I love ‘em! They pick up just the right amount of product, which gives you more control in your application.

A wonderful treat that you can pick up in your local drugstore, Eco Tools offers this five-piece set for under $13! Complete with a sustainable bamboo handles, recycled aluminum ferrules, soft taklon bristles, and a hemp brush bag, this is a fantastic buy in every way. Veganista Alicia Silverstone even designed a limited-edition set.

Using cruelty-free brushes you can apply your makeup with peace of mind and elevated consciousness!
